Annual SFPE Chesapeake Chapter Meeting

The Student Presentations this year were EXCELLENT!  If you didn't make it out to our Annual Meeting at the University of Maryland's FPE department, you really missed out.  This year we heard all about the patent behind the glass bulb sprinkler and mapping electrical arcing for the purposes of determining the cause of fire start.  Very interesting cutting edge research.  Plan to join us in May 2012 to see what the UMD students have accomplished in their 2011-2012 school year.

We have been BUSY!  The 18th Annual Golf Tounament went off with out a hitch dispite the weather.  Over 100 golfers responded to the shot gun start and worked their way around the 18 hole Glenn Dale Golf Club course.  Special thanks go out to Vince Fitzpatrick for once again planning an amazing event, getting great raffel prizes, and helping to raise over $5,000 for charity!  Check out the pictures from the day.

On March 30, 2011 the Chapter went out to Ivy City, a small neighborhood in Northeast DC, to help rebuild the community.  Together with the Americorp and Habitat for Humanity volunteers, twelve chapter members assisted in the construction of three separate single family homes.  The work included carpentry, scaffolding assembly, caulking, roofing, and just having plain old fun.  Check out the pictures.

The 2011 SFPE Seminar & AFSA / AFAA Trade Show was a great success!... with well over 100 fire protection industry professionals in attendance from the participating Associations' Regional Chapters, local and international Manufacturers and Distributors, and many other Organizations representing all facets of the Fire Protection Community of Washington, DC.

We rocked it out in Federal Hill in Baltimore, MD at MaGerks.  Pictures are up on the picture page of this website and can be found by clicking the link on the left!

Our last chapter meeting was held in Columbia, MD and welcomed over 40 participants.  Mr. Koffel, a Chesapeake Chapter member, presented his International Approaches to Performance Based Design presentation from this year's SFPE Professional Development Conference and Exposition.  The presentation addressed how fire protection is achieved in areas outside the United States and how these methods differ from our own US-based practices.

Our Chapter was honored at the 2010 SFPE Annual Meeting held at the Astor 2010 Gold Award RecognitionCrown Plaza in New Orleans, LA.  Thanks to all members, friends, officers, attendees and speakers at our meetings and events over the 2009-2010 year, the SFPE Chesapeake Chapter won the GOLD Chapter Award!  This is the highest honor a chapter can receive and it is given to the local groups that uphold the mission statement of the International organization the best.  Great Job to all!

The Happy Hour event at Whitlow's on Wilson was so much fun!  Approximately 25 chapter members were able to shake off the work day and just catch up with old friends while meeting some new ones.  We also were able to introduce some new people to the chapter and through the event got 10 new members.  We plan to continue these social events so please check back for upcoming events.  Click here to view pictures from the event.

Our Annual Crab Feast and Picnic, held on Saturday, August 7, 2010, was a HUGE success.  At the end of the extremely hot day, we had devoured more than 3 bushels of crabs, 40 hot dogs, 40 hamburgers, and an uncountable amount of snacks.

Thanks go out to all those that helped with set up, clean up, pick up, and delivery. Also, thanks to all that participated in the volleyball tournament and those that just made the day fun for all!

Please mark your calendars for next August and plan to join us for the 2011 Crab Feast and Picnic.

Special thanks goes out to Mr. Weston Baker of FM Global's Engineering Standards Group for coming to our July 2010 meeting and sharing with us the changes that are being made to Data Sheets 2-0 and 8-9.  A modified copy of Mr. Baker's presentation can be found by clicking the Speaker Presentations link on the left of this page.

The 2010 Golf Tournament went off without a hitch.  The course was packed, the beer coolers were full (at least at the beginning of the day), and the day was beautiful!  The tournament winners as well as pictures from the day's festivities are posted here.

The March chapter meeting held at NIST and presented by Dr. Gann on the last century of fire research was fantastic and received rave reviews.  Special thanks to our presenter and all those who attended.

Our 2009 Holiday Happy Hour & Toy Drive was a huge success!  We had tons of food, fun, and friends to kick off the holiday season with.  Thanks to everyone who helped out to make our Wednesday, December 9, 2009 event such a blast!  Check out pictures by clicking here

The Tyco FireXchange Mobile Display Unit was at EBL Fire Engineering's office on November 18, 2009 as part of its national tour.  Cliff Hartford with Tyco was on hand with staff to show off the hands-on, multi-spectrum, fire protection demonstration unit.  Many Chesapeake Chapter members and friends participated along with the EBL team, MEP and Architectural firms, as well as the local AHJs.
